The property had been owned by the clients for over a decade before design work began. For years the clients had been working full time and split their time between the Midwest and Arizona. They originally purchased the land thinking they would build soon but ended up letting the project simmer over the years as they learned more about life in Arizona and their relationship to the desert.
The lot is zoned as hillside bringing with it the challenges of building on a slope. The falling grade faced predominantly West adding to the challenges of keeping the expansive views of the West and Southwest while still shielding the home from the sun, as well as giving the homeowners the single level living they wanted.
The garage of the home is located in the crossover where the best access to the street meets with the least access to views. The casita is located in this same area but has access to some West and Northwestern views. A glass bridge element connects the casita/garage side of the home to the main living areas and the bridge acts as the formal entry of the home while framing a magnificent view of the desert and mountains beyond. The main living area is set to the view side of the slope while the secondary bedrooms and media space are cut into the high side of the slope. The master suite is at the very end of the home in the most private area with access to patios and views. All of the South and West facing glass has large overhangs but also incorporates an exterior, motorized shade system to further limit the intense Arizona sun.
From North to South there is a strong central axis that organizes the views and layout of the home. The main entertaining space, outdoor bbq area, fire feature and spa are located adjacent to both main living spaces and master suite while also taking advantage of the best views on the property.
